Roadmaps are the winners over satnav- especially if you’re young

Research has recently suggested that the traditional road map proves far more reliable than the satnav. The younger generation have become reliant on this technological gadget to navigate to their destination and are least likely to carry an atlas, whereas older motorists are more inclined to rely on maps to plan their routes.

However, research by the AA found that only 46% of older drivers have been lost in the past year, compared to 82% of drivers aged 18 to 24.

Research carried out in April 2011 by Dr Rosamund Langston, a scientist from the University of Dundee has revealed that drivers are losing their natural sense of direction because they are too reliant on satnav systems. She claims that drivers who keep one eye on the satnav screen rather than looking for familiar signs and reminders are losing their innate ‘caveman’ ability to work out where they are.

The satnav has been described as the Casanova of devices – flashy and good for some things, but not to be relied upon.

What do you use to navigate when driving- road maps or satnav?
