2011 Local Election Results: The Winners & Losers So far!

Elections for the Scottish parliament, the Welsh assembly and the Northern Ireland assembly are being held, as are polls for 279 English councils.

The big news is the disastrous results for the Lib Dems.

According to Nick Clegg the Lib Dems are being “blamed” for coalition spending cuts as the party suffers heavy losses in English local elections.

Those seats lost by the Lib Dems have gone to Labour with the Tory vote standing firm.

The SNP has made history by winning a majority in the Scottish Parliament, with Labour failing by one seat to take a majority in the Welsh Assembly.

But what all this means is still uncertain. Why have the Lib Dems done so badly? Some suggest their earlier support was due to the protest vote which they no longer have as they are in government. Another possible reason could be a rejection of the coalition. If this is true it’s more likely that previous Lib Dem voters would reject the coalition rather than Tory supporters, as accusations of policy change and broken promises have been levelled.

Whatever the reason, it certainly appears that with the local map now predominantly two coloured again and not a great day for multi party politics. You can compare the 2011 local election results with our UK Parliamentary Constituency Boundary Wall Map.
